British Classic – When Buying Local makes sense – Handmade Steak Pie and Mash

Like many men, Hubby loves what he calls a ‘proper’ pie – a pastry bottom and top with a good packed filling, not a casserole with a puff pastry top.

On the Isle of Wight we have many fab food producers, and Woodfords Butchers in Bembridge Link is a good old fashioned ‘proper’ butchers that make the most amazing pies – light, flakey pasty, jam packed with meat, in our case tonight, steak, but they do a whole range.

I am a big advocate of make it from scratch, but It’s one of those things that I couldn’t make cheaper, they are expensive compared to a mass produced Pie at £5.60 for a family size one, but the quality is worth it.

IMG_2844I will put it in a hot oven for 25 minutes and whilst it’s heating through, I chop and boil some potatoes till tender and make mash potatoes, a few peas and some gravy – easy, filling and flipping Lush 😇

Please pop into your local butcher if you get the chance, I know people who have never been in one as they are worried about what to order, have a chat with the staff, see what looks good and buy something local once in a while – it will be worth it x

Hi - I'm a 49 yo Mum to 3 kids - Jordan (23), Grace (21) and Max (19). And Wife to my lovely Husband, Dave and step mum to 4 fur babies, our cats Eric, Ernie, Cilla and Bobbie. We live on the beautiful Isle of Wight, Hubby and I were born here, and just love our home. As I hurtle towards 50, my life as a full time (working) parent is coming to an end, with my eldest 2 kids living their own lives, and my youngest who started University in September. I realised that this is not a time to be sad, but a time to take time to spend time on some of the things I enjoy doing - mainly cooking, crafting and creating Pinterest boards for said thing s :) This blog is just a way for me to record the next stages of our lives - I hope you enjoy my ramblings...

  1. It’s such a shame when local shops close down, we used to have loads of family run butchers over here (like most places I guess) but most have gone. Trying to support what’s left in my own little way 😀

  2. Sadly our local butchers shop closed when he got divorced (!!) so we use a combination of 2 local farm shops and a good northern supermarket chain (Booths) for our meat. I do like a good pie though – DH worked in Cardiff a few years ago and we loved Clark’s pies from their shop on the Cowbridge Road, as regularly mentioned by Sir Terry Wogan!
