Fakeaway – British Classic – Beer Batter Fish and Chips

If you were to ask a Brit what food sums the UK you would probably get one of 2 answers Roast Beef and Yorkshire Puddings or Fish and Chips. (Other answers are available πŸ˜‰)

Today I am going for fish and chips. Beer Battered Cod, with Homemade Oven Chips.

I bought some frozen cod fillets from Aldi, I have defrosted them, before coating in a Beer Batter.

The batter is very simple, 50g plain flour, 50g corn flour, a good pinch of salt and enough lager to make a thickish batter – the consistency you want is thick enough to cling to the fish.

I am heating Veg oil in a wide shallow pan, don’t fill it more than 2/3rds and heat it gently – you can of course use a deep fat fryer, ours is too small to cope with this.

I have preheated the oven, to 200, cut a medium Potato per person into Chips, into a oven tray drizzle Veg oil, salt and pepper, ensure all the chips are evenly covered – into the oven for 30-40 minutes, turning to make sure they are Crispy on all sides.

About 10 minutes before the chips are ready, I lightly flour the cod fillets.

Using tongs, dip each fillet into the batter, and slowly into the hot fat

I am doing these 1 at a time, as I want to keep the oil hot and the batter crisp.

I drain them in kitchen paper, and pop into the oven on a tray whilst I cook the rest.

Out come the chips, and the warm Crispy fish. Β A blob of Tartar sauce and you are good to go – Yumm 😍

I realised that this is not a time to be sad, but a time to take time to spend time on some of the things I enjoy doing - mainly cooking, crafting and creating Pinterest boards for said thing s :) This blog is just a way for me to record the next stages of our lives - I hope you enjoy my ramblings...
